Car Transport FAQ

Is shipping a car a good idea?

If you need to get a car from Point A to Point B and you don’t want to drive it, shipping the vehicle is probably your best option. Vehicle transportation can save time, reduce wear and tear on your vehicle, and provide a more convenient way to move your car.

Choose a reputable and trustworthy auto transport provider such as RunBuggy to get safe transport at an affordable price.

A vehicle should not be shipped with a full tank of gas, as this adds excess weight and also presents a hazard. Most auto shipping services recommend no more than a quarter tank of gas.

The length of a car transporter varies depending on the type of vehicle being transported and the make and model of the transporter. A standard car carrier is around 75 to 80 feet in length. These shipping carriers are designed to accommodate multiple vehicles, usually up to 10 cars or trucks, and are often used for long-distance transportation of vehicles from one location to another.

The cheapest way to ship a car across the continental US would be open transport. On average, open transport costs about half as much as enclosed transport.

The company you should use when shipping your vehicle depends on your finances and the type of vehicle you’re transporting. If you are transporting a luxury vehicle or a classic car, going the premium route and paying more for the best service available may be the best option.

Each vehicle transport company has its own pros and cons, and which one works best for you will vary based on your location, financial situation, and the services you’re looking for. Naturally, you can do your own research, reading customer reviews and complaints to see if there are any red flags with certain companies. Keep in mind, though, that almost every company will have its share of disgruntled customers, so try to focus on patterns, not individual reviews.

Enclosed car transport costs more than open transport. According to Motor1, expect to pay around $1 per mile for vehicles shipped within the continental US—roughly double what open transport averages.

Guaranteed pickups and deliveries are offered by some transport providers, who provide customers with a guaranteed pickup date and delivery date for their vehicle.

Note that this is typically done at an additional cost, so it may make your final prices higher than expected.

If you’ve just bought a used vehicle from a private seller in another state and are planning to register and drive it in your state, you’ll pay sales tax to your state based on your state’s tax rate. If you’re lucky enough to live in a state that doesn’t levy a vehicle sales tax, consider yourself lucky.

When you buy a car from a private seller in another state, the seller will sign over the Certificate of Title to you at the time of closing. You’ll then take the title, along with other paperwork required, to your state’s DMV or equivalent motor vehicle registry to complete the transfer of title. At the same time, you’ll pay sales tax (if applicable) and registration fees and apply for new license plates.
