A Guide to License Plates in Used Car Sales
When buying or selling a private-party vehicle, you’ll need to navigate the issue of license plates: removing them, disposing of them, getting new ones, or some other issue.
There’s no nationwide consistency about license plates, so you’ll need to follow your state’s guidelines, which can vary considerably from those of other states. Here are some of the rules that change from one state to the next:
- Some states require front and rear license plates, while others only require a rear plate.
- Some states allow plates to remain on the car when it’s sold, while others require removal.
- Each state has its own plate designs.
- Each state sets its own license plate costs, with a wide range among all the states.
Click on your state below to learn all the details.a
The Importance of License Plates
Vehicle plates are regulated by each state and must be attached for vehicle identification and security reasons. It helps authorities identify the owner if the vehicle is involved in traffic violations or an accident.
It’s important to follow the license plate requirements for your state, as failure to do so could leave you liable for the actions of another person. For example, if you are a seller and your state specifies that you remove the plates from the vehicle, letting the buyer keep them could expose you to liability if the buyer gets into an accident driving the car home.

What Size are License Plates?
In the United States, license plate size depends on the type of vehicle. License plates are a rectangle measuring 6 inches by 12 inches for all cars, trucks, and trailers. Motorcycle license plates are smaller, measuring 4 by 7 inches.
License plates are made out of aluminum, which is durable and resistant to rust.
How to Remove License Plates?
When it comes to removing plates, different states have different requirements. Each state has its own rules and regulations regarding plates, so it is always best to check with your state’s DMV.
When taking plates off a vehicle, use tools carefully to avoid scratching or damaging the body of the car. For screws, a Phillips screwdriver is generally needed. Slotted or flathead screws require a flathead screwdriver. Ensure screws are loosened completely before gently pulling the plate and frame away from the bumper or surface.
Some plates snap or stick directly to the vehicle without screws. Carefully yet firmly detach the plate from the tabs holding it to the surface. Protect the car’s finish by placing a cloth between the license plate and the vehicle when prying plates free. Ensure no adhesive residue or debris is left behind.
How to Dispose License Plates?
For safety reasons, you should always remove and dispose of license plates in accordance with your state’s laws before selling or otherwise transferring ownership of a vehicle.
Of course, if you live in a state that mandates that the license plates stay with your old vehicle and pass to the new buyer, do that.
States differ somewhat on the proper disposal of old license plates.
Here are the most common recommendations:
- Recycle
- Deface
- Cut or bend
- Send back to your local DMV office
- Sell online
How to Get New License Plates?
To get a new license plate, you must register your car in the state in which you live. Displaying a license plate indicates that your vehicle is properly registered. The state will provide a license plate—and any tags required with the plates—once your vehicle is properly registered.
How do I get Temporary License Plates?
Every state has different requirements for issuing temporary license plates (also known as a temporary tag), but commonly required documents include:
- Certificate of Title
- Temporary tag application
- Proof of car insurance
- A valid driver’s license
- Results of inspections or emissions testing, if applicable
- Loan documentation or release, if applicable
Some states require you to show multiple forms of identification. Typically, one must be a government-issued ID, while the other can be something like a bank statement or utility bill.
Check the website of your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for further info.
How do I Find My License Plate Number?
The license plate number is a unique identifier that is assigned to your vehicle. You can find it on your license plate on the front or rear of the vehicle.
If your vehicle is not nearby and you need to know the plate number, you can typically find the license plate number on the back of your car registration under “plate type.”
You can also look on your car insurance card, or log into your account with your vehicle insurance provider. Insurance providers usually list the license plate number associated with a policy.
Finally, you can request your license plate number from your local DMV.
How do I Clean License Plates?
License plates get dirty over time, making it difficult to read the numbers and letters. Fortunately, there are a few simple ways to clean your license plates quickly and easily.
One option is to use a mild soap and water solution. Apply the solution to a soft cloth and then gently wipe the plate.
Another option is to use a commercial cleaner designed specifically for license plates. These products can be found at most auto parts stores. Simply follow the directions on the package. In most cases, all you need to do is spray the cleaner onto the plate and then wipe it off with a soft cloth.
How to Change License Plates?
If you want to change your license plates, you need to visit your local DMV office. However, if you want a specialty plate that supports a particular cause, or if you want a personalized plate number, you may need to submit a completed application and fees.
Once your registration and address are up to date, you can choose the plate and configuration you want. After you submit your application, you will receive confirmation of your new plate and configuration.
Depending on your state, you may be required to replace your license plate if it is lost or stolen. In these cases, it is important to contact your DMV as soon as possible to begin the replacement process.
How Often Should License Plates Be Renewed?
Each state has different requirements for how often license plates need to be renewed, but most states require renewal every one to five years. In some cases, the expiration date of the registration and the license plate may not be the same, so it is important to check both dates to ensure that both are up-to-date.
Depending on the state, renewing license plates may be done online, by mail, or in person at a local DMV office. Failure to renew license plates can result in penalties such as fines or even having the vehicle impounded.
By staying up-to-date on registration requirements, drivers can avoid these potential penalties and keep their vehicles legal to operate on public roads.
How Many Characters do License Plates Have?
In the United States, license plate numbers are typically between six and seven characters long. The number of characters varies by state, however, with some states allowing for up to eight characters on a plate.
In most cases, the extra space is reserved for vanity plates, which allow drivers to choose their plate number. These can be used to spell out a name or message or to simply choose a number that is easy to remember.
There are also a few states that issue plates with only five characters. These are typically reserved for handicapped drivers or vehicles with special historical significance.
How Long Does it Take to Get License Plates in the Mail?
For standard plates, the turnaround time is usually 10 days from the date of processing. For personalized or special plates, it can take up to four weeks for your plates to arrive in the mail. In either case, it is important to keep in mind that there may be delays due to holidays or other factors beyond the DMV’s control.

What are the best license plate designs?
Custom license plates are a popular way to show off your personality on your vehicle. There are many different designs to choose from, and the best design for you will depend on your taste. If you prefer a more understated look, you might choose a simple design with your initials or a short phrase.
For a more eye-catching look, you can choose a design with brightly colored letters or patterns.
You can also add graphics or images to your license plate to make it truly unique. Whatever design you choose, make sure it reflects your personality and makes you feel proud to show it off on your car.

Your vehicle comes with threaded metal holes. However, with so many different vehicle models on the road, it can be difficult to know which size screw you need.
What is a digital license plate?
A digital license plate is a plate that uses a digital display instead of a traditional paper or metal license plate. The digital display can be used to show the current status of the vehicle, such as the registration or inspection expiration date. In addition, digital license plates can also be used to display messages, such as safety messages or Amber Alerts.
Some digital license plates even come equipped with GPS tracking, which can be used to track the location of the vehicle in real time. While digital license plates are not yet widely available, they offer many potential benefits over traditional license plates.

Passenger license plates must be renewed regularly, and drivers typically have the option to choose from a variety of different designs. In some states, passenger license plates can also be personalized with a custom message or image.
How do I get new state license plates after moving to a new state?
The process of getting new license plates varies from state to state, but there are a few general steps you can expect to follow.
First, you’ll need to obtain insurance coverage in your new state. Then, you’ll need to gather some documents, including your license and the title of your vehicle.
With these items in hand, you can then register your vehicle in your new state and get your new license plates.
Be sure to follow the different requirements for registration and insurance in your new state so that you can hit the open road with confidence.
How do you put license plates on the front of a car with no holes?
There are a few options for installing license plates on the front of the car with no holes.
– You can use a plate frame that simply attaches to the edges of the plate with adhesive strips or Velcro.
– You can use a clear plastic cover that adheres to the entire front surface of the plate. This type of cover is nearly invisible, and it also helps to protect the plate from weathering and scratches.
– Some people choose to display their plates using suction cups. These provide a very secure hold, but they can be difficult to remove if you ever need to access the back of the plate.
Regardless of which method you choose, be sure to clean both the front of your car and the back of your license plate before attaching them, as this will help ensure a strong bond.
What can I do if my license plates are stolen?
If your license plates are stolen, the first thing you should do is report the theft to the police. This will help to ensure that your vehicle can’t be used for illegal purposes.
Once you have filed a police report, you should also contact your state’s DMV office to let them know that your plates are missing. In most cases, you will be able to obtain a new set of plates or a temporary tag that will allow you to drive legally until your replacement plates arrive.
While losing your license plates can be inconvenient, following these steps will help to ensure that you can get back on the road as quickly as possible.
