Pickup Trucks FAQ

Is a three-quarter-ton truck a 3500?

A three-quarter-ton truck is not classified as a 3500 model. These trucks are classified as 2500 models. Some of the examples are the RAM 2500, Chevrolet Silverado 2500, and Ford F-250.

The term “three-quarter ton” or “3/4 ton” for trucks comes from an old naming convention that doesn’t really match their actual payload capacity anymore. It started back when these trucks could carry about 1,500 pounds, which is 3/4 of a ton (since a ton is 2,000 pounds). Despite the name sticking around, modern trucks in this category can usually carry much more than that.

The main difference between a 1/2 ton truck and a 3/4 ton truck lies in their payload capacity and overall size:

Here is how you can determine if a truck is a 3/4 ton model:

– Badging and labels: manufacturers label their trucks with designations such as “2500” or “F-250,” which indicate a 3/4 ton truck. For example, Ford uses “F-250,” Chevrolet and GMC use “2500,” and Ram uses “2500.”

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN): the VIN provides information about the truck’s specifications, including its classification. You can decode the VIN using online tools or by consulting the owner’s manual.

– GVWR: check the sticker on the driver’s side door jamb or in the owner’s manual for the GVWR. A ¾ ton truck has a GVWR ranging from 8,501 to 10,000 pounds.

– Suspension and axles: ¾ ton trucks have heavier-duty suspension and axles compared to ½ ton trucks.

– Tire size and load range: ¾ ton trucks often come with larger, higher load range tires created for heavier payloads and towing capacities.

– Owner’s manual: the owner’s manual will specify the truck’s classification and capabilities.

Not all 3/4 ton trucks are diesel. While many ¾ ton trucks offer diesel engine options, they are also available with gasoline engines.

The Ram 1500 is not a ¾ ton truck. It is a ½ ton truck. The Ram 1500 is made for lighter-duty tasks and everyday driving, with a payload capacity typically around 1,500–2,000 pounds. For a ¾ ton truck in the Ram lineup, you’ve got the Ram 2500.

A 1 ton truck is a heavy-duty pickup truck made to handle larger payloads and towing capacities than ½ ton and ¾ ton trucks. The “1 ton” designation is a historical reference to the truck’s payload capacity, originally indicating that the truck could carry about 2,000 pounds (1 ton).
